Touched
By An
Angel
The air is thick with heat and I can barely breath. It is 3:25 AM and sleep is yet to come. As I toss and turn, the sweat trickles from my brow and dampens my pillow. The heat is stifling, but that is not what denies me the bliss of sleep. With my life crumbling around me and my nerves wound so tight that I feel I will explode at any moment, it is little wonder that sleep eludes me. I can stand it no more and I pour myself from the bed and wander into the bathroom. Turning on the faucet, I splash cold water on my face, but it does nothing to relieve my discomfort. Feeling very restless and anxious, I decide to take a walk hoping the night air will help to relax me. After dressing and heading downstairs and outside, I start to wander down the street and find myself at the park. Strolling into the park I notice it is very dark and there is a very light breeze sneaking between the trees. Spying a bench, I figure I will sit and enjoy what little breeze I can. Sitting there with my head in my hands feeling such utter despair, I wonder if there is any point in going on. As The tears soak my palms and trace their lines down my forearms, I am suddenly overcome by the feeling of being watched. I slowly remove my hands from my tear stained face and I am startled to see a very lovely lady standing there. She has very long blonde hair and is wearing a tight fitting lace gown woven like a doily. I can see minute patches of soft skin peeking through and I wonder how it is that I was unaware of her approach. She almost glows with love and compassion and she is looking straight into my eyes. I am so surprised by this vision that I am speechless. I shake my head to clear it and look back figuring the vision will disappear, but she is still standing there with her eyes locked tightly on mine. As fear starts to creep into my heart, she smiles and the night seems to explode with light, the glow seeming to come from within her. I am transfixed by this vision of love and beauty and even if I wanted to flee, I cannot seem to move a muscle. Suddenly, she almost glides towards me and reaches to my cheek and wipes away a tear. As she touches me I feel a jolt of emotion that is laced with love, compassion and understanding. My body is infused with warmth and I now feel tears of joy come to my eyes. She caresses my cheek with her palm and I feel new hope engulf me. Still not saying a word, she glides backwards as her fingertips trail down my cheek and across my chin. As she smiles at me again, the glow saturates the night and I find myself smiling back this time. Not a word has passed between us and as I open my mouth to ask who she is, a beautiful pair of white wings unfold from her back and she begins to float up from the ground. Rising gracefully into the air, she spreads her wings to their fullest and slowly dissolves into the dark of the night. I sit there staring at the spot where she had been, feeling new hope course through my body. The tears of joy flow freely down my cheeks as I realize I have been touched by an angel.
